The Charterhouse of Pleterje in Slovenia was founded by Count Herman II of Celje in 1403. The construction of the first monastery was completed in 1406 but was destroyed by the Turks in 1471 whereupon a fortress like structure was erected. In 1593 Pleterje was transferred to the Jesuits by Archduke Ferdinand II. The Jesuits retained ownership of the property until 1772 when it was turned over to the state. In 1839 Pleterje became privately owned and was repurchased by the Carthusian Order in 1899 and construction began on a new monastery which was completed in 1904; the Church being consecrated on November 4 of that year. In 1943 seventeen cells were destroyed by communist attack.
